Training

Milford Firefighters train regularly to learn and maintain a wide variety of knowledge and skills. The full-time staff train regularly during their shifts.

.

Call firefighters meet to train twice per month, once for a firefighting training and once for technical rescue training. They are required to attend a minimum of 9 company drills and 9 rescue drills a year. Company drills are designed to keep their firefighting skills sharp, skills such as working with hose lines, ladders, search and rescue, victim removal, fire behavior and R.I.T. (Rapid Intervention Team). Rescue drills consist of specialized training such as vehicle extrication, heights rescue, confined space rescue, ice rescue, and hazardous materials training.

.

Every member of the Milford Fire Department is required to obtain Firefighter 1 certification within one year of employment. Firefighter 1 is approximately 192 hours and six months of classes. They are also required to become rescue qualified within two years of employment. New firefighters participate in a special 26-week training program that occurs once per week during their probationary period, which is usually their first 6-months with the department. This training is aligned with the current Firefighter certification curriculum used by the NH Fire Academy to ensure that training content is consistent.
