History
History of the Milford Ambulance Service
1973
People from Milford and surrounding towns met with the Board of Selectmen to attempt to organize an ambulance service. The selectmen at that time felt the service provided by United Ambulance (out of Nashua) could be improved upon. Prior to that, the local funeral director Smith-Heald was performing the service until the State implemented new regulations for EMS.
November – Milford had a special town meeting and voted on a warrant for the selectmen to spend $36,000 of revenue sharing to purchase equipment and provide the new service with some operating expenses. Two new ambulances were purchased from Draper Chevrolet on Garden St. for $13,750 each. Twenty-seven men and women took the 26-hour American Red Cross Training course which was needed to be a licensed ambulance attendant. There were two registered EMTs (which required a 72 hour course), a Registered Nurse and a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) who would provide 24/7 coverage of the town.
December, 31st - The volunteers would receive $100 a year and $5.00 per call after a 6 month probation period. The new service took over at midnight on 12/31/73 and had their first call on the following Tuesday when it received an emergency call from Dr. Alexander Law to transport a patient to St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua.
