Vital Records

Vital Records

The Town Clerk is responsible for the recording of all births and deaths that occur in the Town, as well as marriages where the license was obtained by the Town.  Vital records are reports of vital events, which include births, marriages, deaths, divorces,  separations, and annulments.  Per New Hampshire state law, birth records one hundred years old or less, and all other vital records fifty years old or less, are considered closed records.  Closed records may be obtained only by immediate family members or by those individuals who prove a direct and tangible interest in that vital record.

Copies of death records since 1965, marriage records since 1960, divorce records since 1979, and birth records since 1935 are available at the Town Clerk’s office, regardless of where in the State of New Hampshire the vital event took place.  Copies of death records before 1965 must be obtained from the Town/City Clerk of the town/city where the death took place or from the New Hampshire Division of Vital Records.  Copies of birth records before 1935 must be obtained from the Town/City Clerk of the town/city where the birth took place or from the New Hampshire Division of Vital Records.  Copies of marriage records before 1960 and divorce records before 1979 must be obtained from the Town/City Clerk of the town/city where the marriage license/divorce was obtained or from the New Hampshire Division of Vital Records.
