Smoke Alarm Program

Working smoke alarms save lives! And cut the risk of death in a fire by half.

Does your home have working smoke alarms?

If your answer is "no", we can help you!

The Milford Fire Department has partnered with the American Red Cross with a goal to ensure that every home in Milford has working smoke alarms. Through this program, Milford residents may be eligible to receive free installation of one or more smoke alarms. Additionally, we are able to assist residents who are financially able to provide alarms and batteries, but need assistance installing batteries or replacing alarms. Residents in need of assistance can fill out the request form at the link below to request a home fire safety visit.

Smoke alarm program FAQ's:

Q: What does the home fire safety visit consist of?

A: Milford Firefighters will visit your home and provide you with information about helping to prevent home fires, and install at least one 10-year sealed battery smoke alarm. Depending on the size and layout of the home, more than one alarm may be provided.

Q: What is expected of me as the homeowner or resident?

A: Someone will need to meet the Milford Firefighters at the home for the visit. Additionally, a basic information form must be signed by the resident receiving the alarm(s) for Red Cross tracking purposes.

Q: Can I use the smoke alarm offered in this program to replace my hard-wired alarms?

A: Generally, no. NH State Law requires interconnected smoke alarms in all single- and multiple-family dwellings. While there are limited exemptions for interconnection in existing, older construction, it would still be required where interconnection was previously provided or is possible during renovations or without removing interior finishes. If your home has hard-wired smoke alarms in need of replacement, we can help you find suitable replacements to purchase, and install them once you have them available. See the informational bulletin from the NH State Fire Marshal's Office at the bottom of this page for more information on smoke-alarm requirements in homes and apartments.

Q: Are there special alarms for persons who are hearing-impaired?

A: Yes, alarms with strobe lights and bed shaker devices are available. This need should be communicated when requesting an appointment so the necessary units can be obtained before the visit.
